October 27th, 2024, the trajectory of the life of Cleveland Browns‘ fan favorite Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah was sent into a tailspin. The Browns were 1-6, facing the 5-2 Baltimore Ravens.

Baltimore Ravens running back Derrick Henry carried the ball over the right side of the line of scrimmage, and JOK met him in a head-on collision that had no malicious intent, no bad fundamentals, and generally nothing wrong at the point of contact. The result was a Ravens gain on the play and a paralyzed Cleveland linebacker.

Owusu-Koramoah lay on the ground paralyzed from head to toe, and as he lay there, he prayed that God let him get up and move again. He eventually regained movement in his extremities, but as he lay in the hospital bed later that day, the doctors told him that it was likely going to be the end of his NFL playing career.

It was one of the saddest moments in Cleveland Browns history for a young man who does everything the right way, who has so much promise, and has his career likely cut short.

For JOK, it was an opportunity to either sink into a deep and dark depression or find a way to pivot his life and make something meaningful out of it, even in his new circumstances.

On Friday, the Browns and Owusu-Koramoah announced that he had been accepted into the Harvard Kennedy School to pursue a Master’s degree in public policy. Applicants for the program were to submit an essay with the prompt: “An Adversity Essay.”

Owusu-Koramoah detailed that play and that life-altering moment in his essay. I strongly suggest reading the excerpt. It is a powerful realization and reminder that these gladiators are humans and young men who are not invincible. Injuries are just timetables for fans, but they are incredibly challenging for the players, especially one of this incredible magnitude.

The outlook right now for JOK is life after football. Although he continues to seek different opinions on the severity of his medical status and the risk-to-reward factor of suiting up and playing another snap of football ever again in his life.

He remains optimistic about trying to find a way onto the field. He stays close to the Cleveland Browns facility and specifically the linebacker room, but as he changes his view to life after football, he is starting strong by earning a Master’s degree from Harvard.
