There has been little movement on the Trent Williams situation, but the San Francisco 49ers continue to express confidence that a deal will get done with the future Hall of Fame offensive tackle. For now, both sides appear motivated to reach an agreement.

“We’ve had good communication throughout,” general manager John Lynch recently said. “I would say, in the last week, it’s kind of intensified, and I feel like we’re on the precipice of something good happening—but we’ll see.”

Lynch added a note of caution: “Don’t want to make any statements, like, ‘Hey, we’re right there,’ because these things have felt like that before. But I do feel like we’re in good communication and hopeful.”

If negotiations stall, however, at least one team appears ready to act. According to NFL insider Jason La Canfora, the Kansas City Chiefs are still closely monitoring the situation.

“I continue to hear the Chiefs have a major thing for 49ers left tackle Trent Williams and are ready to pounce if/when he is available in trade,” La Canfora recently said in an interview with Casino Guru. “The 49ers remain in a contract impasse with Williams about reworking that [deal].”

With the 2026 NFL Draft approaching, Kansas City could pivot to adding a rookie offensive tackle, which might lessen its interest in pursuing Williams.

The Chiefs were aggressive suitors when Williams was previously available in 2021, but the 49ers ultimately outbid Kansas City to retain the All-Pro left tackle.

Meanwhile, several mock drafts have linked the 49ers to offensive tackle prospects in the first round. Such a move could provide at least some leverage in ongoing negotiations while also securing a long-term successor at the position.

Williams will turn 38 ahead of the 2026 NFL season, a factor in the ongoing negotiations.

“This one’s never got ugly,” Lynch said. “It’s been very straightforward, direct. And I just think there’s a lot of nuance to that situation. He’s one of the great players, I think, to ever play the game, but there’s a reality with his age. It’s like, how do you thread that needle, and how do you find a deal where everyone’s taken care of and happy?”
