WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – Sometimes the best laid plans have to change, and that’s what happened to the Watertown Red & Black.
The local semi-pro squad had planned to leave the Northeastern Football Alliance and head to the new look Empire Football League. Unfortunately, the EFL could not come up with enough teams to have a legitimate League. So for the Red & Black, it’s back to the NFA for another season.
That means instead of starting the season in July, Watertown will be kicking off its season May 30th at home against Ithaca.
“Ya, you know, we thought we had it going well. The first two meetings were going as planned. We thought we had 5 teams, and then one of the teams opted out, and then another team opted out. We were back with 3 teams, and you can’t do that. It’s not possible. When I got the phone call from the New York league again to come back to the NFA, I said,” Sure, I’ll be glad to do it.” It’s an 8-game schedule, and you are sure to play football. We shifted gears one more time, and it is what it is. I’m going to make the best of it,” said George Ashcraft.
