It’s been a while. Philadelphia Eagles fans have been waiting for someone to say it plainly. Now, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has done exactly that. As questions continue to swirl about the future of Lincoln Financial Field and what comes next once the team’s lease expires in 2032, Shapiro recently offered the kind of public reassurance many in the fan base wanted to hear while speaking with The Philadelphia Inquirer.

“We’re not going to lose the Birds. They’re going to stay in Philly.”

He also added that any future discussions would be handled in a manner “that protects the Eagles and protects the taxpayers.” That matters, especially after Eagles Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie acknowledged earlier in April that the organization is in the “exploratory stage” of researching its stadium future.

Lurie said the lease at Lincoln Financial Field runs through 2032. He also noted that leases can be extended and described the process as early and open-ended, with research covering both new stadium concepts and renovations. Naturally, that openness created anxiety. Any time the words “exploratory” and “stadium” appear in the same sentence, fans immediately begin imagining the worst. Would the Eagles leave South Philadelphia? Would they leave the city entirely? Would one of the NFL’s most iconic home-field environments be reduced to a memory?

Shapiro’s comments do not answer every question, but they do set a tone. The expectation, at least from the state’s highest office, is that the Eagles will remain in Philadelphia. That does not mean the current stadium issue is insignificant. Lincoln Financial Field is more than two decades old.

Sure, it remains in far better shape than Veterans Stadium was at a similar age, but the clock is still ticking toward an eventual decision. Lurie has made it clear the Eagles are studying everything, not rattling sabers. Shapiro even described Lurie’s comments as “thoughtful and sober.”

So, no, the full story has not been fully written yet. For now, Eagles fans got the update they were hoping for. The process may continue. The research may expand. The debate may linger, but the message from Harrisburg was clear. The Birds are expected to stay exactly where they belong.
