Sam LaPorta

The Detroit Lions had a good 2025 season as they finished 9-8, but they also ended up finishing fourth in the NFC North. for the Lions, they enter the 2026 season in an interesting spot as they have the key players, but they also have to start looking at the future as some of these star players will be needing extensions. Some of those players include Jahmyr Gibbs, Sam LaPorta, Jack Campbell, and Brian Branch.

With that, and the point where they should consider trading one to have more resources going forward, and make sure they stay contenders.

One player they could look to trade is LaPorta, and if this is the case, this is a trade the Kansas City Chiefs need to be in on.

Why Sam LaPorta Would Be Perfect for Kansas City

Travis Kelce is still on the roster, and Noah Gray is there as well, but Kansas City’s tight end depth lacks the long-term stability. Kelce is 36 years old, and has clearly taken steps back in recent seasons from his typical dominant seasons he used to produce.

For a Kansas City offense that relies heavily on the tight end spot, and needs that safety target for Patrick Mahomes to throw to, they need to start to set that position up better for the future.

Mahomes gives Kansas City a chance to win every season, but keeping him surrounded with top-level talent is how dynasties stay alive. Trading for LaPorta would not just be about replacing Kelce. It would be about making sure the offense never takes a step back at one of its most important positions.

LaPorta would give Mahomes a player who can thrive in the middle of the field, create mismatches against linebackers and safeties, and produce after the catch. That is the exact kind of skill set that has made Kelce so valuable in Andy Reid’s offense for years.

Over his three years in the NFL so far, LaPorta has accumulated 2,104 yards and 20 touchdowns. That type of production is exactly what the Chiefs need to add to their offense as they start to transition away from Kelce.

For the Lions, trading away Sam LaPorta wouldn’t be easy, but if they won’t be able to re-sign him due to the financial resources they need to utilize elsewhere, trading LaPorta and gaining resources back in return would be wise for them.
