KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said the organization is celebrating both the past and future of the franchise this week.
Hunt praised the team’s recent draft performance.
“I want to compliment the job that Brett Veach and his staff have done,” Hunt said.
Hunt addressed the decision to re-sign the team’s tight end.
“There aren’t many Travis Kelces out there — if any, and we wanted to do whatever we needed to do to bring him back when it became clear he was interested in playing,” Hunt said.
Hunt celebrates the Royals’ stadium plans, which were revealed earlier this week.
“I’m extremely happy for the Royals and John Sherman — that they’ve found a solution, something that will have them close to downtown, something that is a goal of the organization for probably a decade, as they’ve thought about the next step,” Hunt said.
He also confirmed the new Chiefs stadium will be a domed stadium with no retractable roof.
“As you know, we have a design competition that is ongoing between Manica and Populous. And I hope in the upcoming months we can make a decision on the lead architect. We’re still waiting on the exact layouts of the sites we’re looking at. But I would anticipate that renderings and a firm site location later this year,” Hunt said.
Hunt is excited about the rapidly approaching World Cup.
“It’s hard to believe the World Cup is a little over 45 days away. It’s going to be a tremendous opportunity for Kansas City to be seen and appreciated on the global stage. There will literally be billions of TV viewers who will watch games from Kansas City,” Hunt said.
Hunt said his father, Lamar Hunt, would be excited about Arrowhead hosting World Cup matches.
“He would be so excited. I remember a meeting in 1990 that he and I had with FIFA standing on the field of Arrowhead. And he was trying to convince FIFA that we could widen the field so that the ’94 World Cup could come to Kansas City. So here we are 20-plus years later, and that dream will finally be realized and it will be a special moment for me and my entire family,” Hunt said.
