The 2026 NFL draft is over. The free agency frenzy has slowed to a drip. Undrafted rookie free agents have been swooped up. For players at the start of their career, this signifies the start of the next season.

For players nearing the end of their career, this signifies the time when they might start contemplating retirement. Such is the case for former New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson.

After spending 10 years with the Seattle Seahawks, Wilson spent two seasons with the Denver Broncos and one season with the Pittsburgh Steelers before joining the Giants in 2025. He was never able to recreate what he did in Seattle, and now the 37-year-old free agent is considering hanging up his cleats.

Wilson has worked with CBS a few times over the last several years, including making an appearance during the Giants’ bye week in 2025.

The Athletic reports that The NFL Today, CBS’s Sunday pregame show, is the favorite landing spot, and the two sides have had lengthy discussions.

Russell Wilson is in deep discussions to go into television, which could mark the end of what is likely a Hall of Fame career as an NFL quarterback, sources briefed on the talks told The Athletic.

“The NFL Today,” CBS’ Sunday pregame show, is considered the favorite as the two sides have had lengthy talks, the sources said. Wilson, 37, recently had a visit with the New York Jets about the possibility of backing up Geno Smith.

Wilson has worked with CBS on a few occasions over the years, including during a Giants bye-week last season.

CBS declined to comment to The Athletic.

While with the Giants, Wilson appeared in just six games. He completed 69 percent passes for 831 yards and three touchdowns while also throwing three interceptions and taking 10 sacks.

Jaxson Dart appeared in 14 games in 2025, and it was clear from his first start against the Los Angeles Chargers that he would eventually take over the job. It didn’t take long for the Giants to make that a reality, pushing Wilson to QB2 and, eventually, to QB3.

It’s no secret that Wilson enjoys the limelight, and if he’s hired by CBS, he will replace Matt Ryan, who left the show to become president of football for the Atlanta Falcons. After NBC’s recent hiring of Mike Tomlin, CBS may want to spice up its crew with a fresh face on the screen this fall.
