With the New York Giants in the first offseason with head coach John Harbaugh, the team has been busy making initial moves to build the roster. As the Giants look forward to training camp in preparation for the 2026 season, the team has made a contract decision regarding cornerback Deonte Banks.

New York had to decide on Banks’ fifth-year option, as the team has made the choice to decline it, which probably should not come as a surprise to fans. As Jordan Raanan of ESPN reported the contract news from the Giants, he would also mention the on-field struggles that Banks has dealt with.

“Cornerback Deonte Banks’ fifth-year option is being declined by the Giants. Hardly a surprise given his struggles the past few seasons,” Raanan wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Essentially, the Giants declined to pick up an option that would have put Banks under contract in 2027 for $12.633 million. Instead, he’s fighting for playing time with second-round pick Colton Hood and free-agent signing Greg Newsome in his way.”

While Banks will be on the Giants for the upcoming season, it will be a prove-it year for the 25-year-old in the final year of his rookie contract to show New York and other teams that he’s worthy entering 2027 free agency. Banks was drafted by New York with the 24th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and has not recorded an interception since his rookie season.

At any rate, it remains to be seen what happens to Banks on the Giants, now with Harbaugh as the head coach, with the team looking to improve after finishing with a 4-13 record.
