The Washington Commanders are considering a move to sign former Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs following the 2026 NFL Draft to address significant defensive struggles. Head coach Dan Quinn, who previously coached the All-Pro in Dallas, seeks to stabilize a secondary that lacked veteran playmaking during the 2025-26 season.
As reported by WUSA9, the Commanders’ current roster features young talent but lacks a proven ball-hawk after the team opted not to select a defensive back with any of their six draft picks. Analysts suggest the 27-year-old free agent could be available on a one-year deal as he looks to rebound from recent injury setbacks.
“Trevon Diggs brings elite upside and massive questions to the secondary,” wrote David Harrison, WUSA9 analyst.

The journalist noted that the current depth chart likely consists of Trey Amos, Mike Sainristil, Amik Robertson, and Ahkello Witherspoon for the upcoming season. Harrison highlighted the existing chemistry between the defender and the Commanders’ leadership.
“Trevon Diggs is a 27-year-old cornerback free agent who Commanders head coach Dan Quinn knows well from their days with the Dallas Cowboys. Diggs fits the profile of a press-man corner with a passion for hunting the football,” Harrison added.
Diggs’ professional trajectory shifted following a stellar 2021 campaign where he recorded 11 interceptions. According to the Times of India, his productivity declined after an ACL tear in 2023 and subsequent knee concerns in 2024, leading to his release from Dallas and a brief stint with the Green Bay Packers in 2025.

The Las Vegas Raiders are also reportedly monitoring Diggs as a low-risk depth option, as noted by Bleacher Report analyst Timothy Rapp. For Washington, the move represents a chance to regain the defensive form that led them to three Super Bowl titles in the past.
The Dallas Cowboys’ defensive struggles in 2025 have left several starters, including Diggs, unemployed as of May 4, 2026. Cowboys Wire reports that alongside Diggs, defensive ends Dante Fowler and Jadeveon Clowney, safety Donovan Wilson, and linebacker Kenneth Murray remain unsigned.
The post-draft period is critical for these veterans because signings no longer impact the compensatory pick formula for NFL teams. While some analysts question the defensive personnel from the previous season, the Commanders see an opportunity to capitalize on Diggs’ high-level instincts.
