The San Francisco 49ers are gearing up for the 2025 NFL season with Jauan Jennings and rookie Ricky Pearsall projected as their starting wide receivers. After trading away Deebo Samuel and with Brandon Aiyuk not expected to be ready for the start of the season—despite encouraging progress—some have speculated that the 49ers might pursue a veteran wideout.

Names like Keenan Allen and Amari Cooper have been floated as potential targets to bolster San Francisco’s receiving corps. However, one NFL insider believes the 49ers are comfortable with their current depth.

“[T]hey’re well-prepared for the possibility that Brandon Aiyuk isn’t full-go when the season starts,” wrote Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer in his latest mailbag. “Ricky Pearsall will certainly get a shot to have a bigger role in the offense, Jauan Jennings is a reliable complementary piece, and from there they have a promising young guy in Jacob Cowing, plus Demarcus Robinson coming over from the Rams and some depth behind George Kittle for their two tight-end looks.”

The 49ers added Robinson in free agency, but he could face a three-game suspension and may not be available until Week 4, when the 49ers host the Jacksonville Jaguars on September 28. The team also drafted wide receivers Jordan Watkins and Junior Bergen, though their roles remain uncertain.

Still, Breer believes the 49ers have enough offensive firepower around quarterback Brock Purdy to take advantage of what is widely considered the NFL’s easiest schedule in 2025.

“There’s plenty to work with there, especially if Christian McCaffrey can find his stride,” Breer noted.

As for concerns about San Francisco’s offseason departures and doubts about a turnaround from last year’s 6-11 campaign, Breer says the panic is overblown.

“The San Francisco 49ers haven’t been as depleted as you’ve been led to believe—yes, a few foundational pieces are gone, but San Francisco survived these sorts of things before,” he added.
