Where did the Indianapolis Colts land in ESPN’s preseason Football Power Index (FPI) rankings?
But first, what is FPI? Using analytics, FPI “is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season,” and results are based on “10,000 simulations.”

For the Colts, they come in at No. 23 in these FPI rankings at minus-1.9 points, meaning that against an average NFL team, the Colts would lose by 1.9 points based on the thousands of simulations.
As we’ve discussed before, there is a lot to like about this Colts roster. The secondary has been reshaped with the additions of Cam Bynum and Charvarius Ward, not to mention that the addition of Lou Anarumo as defensive coordinator should provide the unit with a boost, and the defensive line has been heavily invested in over the years.
On offense, the Colts have a number of playmaking options, including at the tight end position now with Tyler Warren.
However, the biggest unknown for this Colts team lies at the game’s most important position–quarterback. Ultimately, how good the Colts are will be determined by the play of whoever ends up under center.

Throughout offseason programs and into training camp, Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones will be splitting the starting reps, and as Shane Steichen has said earlier this offseason, consistency will determine who wins that job.
“It is an open competition,” Steichen said after Wednesday’s practice. “Those guys are competing. We’re breaking down the reps; they’re both getting one reps, they’re both getting two reps. I think through OTAs, we got nine good practices, they’ll both get about 170 reps a piece with those guys, with the ones and twos. We’ll flip-flop them.”
On paper, the Colts have the 12th-easiest strength of schedule heading into the 2025 season.
