KANSAS CITY, Mo. —

The biggest storyline for the Kansas City Chiefs leading up to the 2025 NFL season will be the team’s offensive line.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes was sacked a career-high total last year, including six times in the Super Bowl.

The Chiefs signed San Francisco 49ers left tackle Jaylon Moore during the offseason and used draft capital immediately to address the tackle position, selecting Ohio State offensive lineman Josh Simmons with their first-round pick.

The team also traded former guard Joe Thuney to the Chicago Bears and is still working to lock up guard Trey Smith on a long-term contract.

Head coach Andy Reid discussed the offensive line Thursday after OTAs.

Andy Reid on first-round draft pick Josh Simmons

Simmons missed most of his final season at Ohio State, and the team is hoping he’ll become a long-term option at tackle.

“He’s one that didn’t work this week, but he’s been doing everything at that point,” Reid said. “He’s actually further ahead than I thought he was. We might actually be able to get — originally we weren’t going to have him in the Phase Three part at all, other than the individual stuff. So we’ve kept him out of the team stuff with that. But he did all Phase Two. He’s done a good job of what we say. We just got to get him in with the defense against him.”

Reid on Kingsley Suamataia’s switch from tackle to guard

Suamataia was drafted by the Chiefs in the 2024 NFL Draft.

After some struggles at tackle, the team has transitioned him to guard.

“We moved him there for that second Denver game,” Reid said. “I mentioned that that was one of the positives, was the only positive that came out of that game. I thought he did a nice job there, so we’re moving him in there. Spags runs a million different looks, so this is the best thing for him, to get in there and have a bunch of things thrown at him. He’s done a nice job so far.”

Reid said Suamataia and Mike Caliendo will compete for the left guard position.

Moore was one of the first free agents the Chiefs signed.

He backed up future Pro Football Hall of Famer Trent Williams, who has anchored the 49ers’ offensive line for several season.

“Strong, strong kid,” he said. “He’s smart, but you can tell he’s compact and strong. It looks like to me — without, I mean, going live — it’s hard to do though, like D-line, because they just get to a contact point, they kind of pull off and do their thing. But he looks like he’s a strong kid.”
