How will flex scheduling work for 2026 NFL season? Rules, key dates to know

The 2026 NFL schedule will be released May 14, but no matter how hard league executives try, there will invariably be some late-season duds slated for prime time or other precious standalone windows the league relies on for maximum visibility.

The good news for the NFL is that even if a star quarterback ends up missing half of the season or one of the team is entirely removed from the playoff hunt, they have a “press in case of emergency button” known as flex scheduling.

With respect to the fan who planned to attend the game in person, flex scheduling provides the NFL a chance to move certain matchups around, particularly in the last several weeks of the season.

NFL flex scheduling rules: What is allowed?

Flex scheduling for “Sunday Night Football” can be used twice between Weeks 5–10 and as needed in Weeks 11–17.

“Monday Night Football” games are eligible for flex scheduling from weeks 12-17 without limitation.

For “Thursday Night Football,” the margin to flex is Weeks 13-17 and may be done only twice from Week 14-16.

Of course, Sunday afternoon games that air on CBS or FOX may be moved between the 1 p.m. ET, 4:05 p.m. ET, or 4:25 p.m. ET time slots.

What other flex scheduling rules are there?

Since 2023, flex scheduling has been able to move games not only from Sunday afternoon into Sunday night, but also from Sunday afternoon into Monday Night Football or Thursday Night Football.

The NFL must give at least 12 days’ notice to flex any Week 5-13 Sunday night game or Monday night game from Weeks 12-17. Flexing a Sunday night game in Weeks 14-17 requires only six days’ notice.

For “TNF” Weeks 14-16, flex scheduling should be announced 21 days prior to the game.

What about Week 18?

No start times or dates are provided for Week 18 games because the league waits to make sure the games with the steepest playoff implications have the most visibility. The NFL will air two games, typically, on the Saturday of the final weekend in standalone windows with the remainder held Sunday (which includes a “SNF” regular-season finale).
