Before the Denver Broncos gave general manager George Paton a new, five-year contract that runs through the 2030 season, there were rumors that the Minnesota Vikings might pursue him for their GM opening, but there were no indications that Paton wanted to leave Denver.

While Paton seemingly wasn’t in danger of leaving, it turns out that the rumored Minnesota interest was legitimate. The Vikings “had interest” in bringing Paton back before he re-signed with the Broncos, according to a report from the Denver Post’s Luca Evans. That’s obviously off the table now.

Paton has been Denver’s GM since 2021. Before that, Paton worked in Minnesota from 2007-2020, including a stint as assistant GM from 2015-2020. The Vikings can’t hire him now, but they did interview Broncos assistant GM Reed Burckhardt for their GM opening. Before landing in Denver, Burckhardt spent 13 seasons in Minnesota, overlapping with Paton. So the Vikings weren’t able to poach Paton, but Burckhardt could be a name to watch on the GM front.
