Two former Calvary Day football players returned to Savannah over the weekend, discussing their expectations for the upcoming college football season.

Thomas Blackshear, now a Georgia Bulldog, recently completed his freshman season. Blackshear played in three games last year, recording two receptions for 23 yards. He expressed optimism for a breakout season and high hopes for his team.

“National championship,” Blackshear said.

When asked if Georgia could win a national championship next year, Blackshear replied, “For sure, for sure.”

Asked how many touchdowns he might score in the championship game, Blackshear said, “I don’t know. I hope I score a lot, but we’re going to get the ‘natty’ for sure.”

Walter Mathis Jr., Blackshear’s former Calvary Day teammate, transferred this offseason from LSU to Auburn. Mathis played in 12 games last season, finishing with nine tackles and one pass breakup. He shared his mindset for the upcoming season.

“My mindset is to definitely come in and dominate,” Mathis said. “Even against certain opponents. Coming in and dominating to show people who I am.”
