Since 2017, when general manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan joined the team, the 49ers have won the NFC West three times, have made the playoffs five times and have reached the Super Bowl twice.

While the team’s brass has had some misses on Day 1 of NFL draft past, they still have made sure San Francisco is set up for success.

For that reason, NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero says both Shanahan and Lynch are likely to remain with the 49ers for the foreseeable future.

“I don’t see a world where John Lynch ever gets fired by the 49ers — same thing with Kyle Shanahan,” Pelissero said Monday on “The Rich Eisen Show.” “They have stabilized that franchise after, if you remember how things were for several years before they got there, it was a constant churn. It was the end of the Jim Harbaugh era, which became the Jim Tomsula era, which became the Chip Kelly era.

“The 49ers are competitive year after year. They certainly, I think it’s fair to say, have supplemented a lot through trades and at times free agency because they’ve had some misses in the draft.”

Some of those misses include names like Soloman Thomas, Reuben Foster and, most notably, Trey Lance. The quarterback cost them two future first-round selections, along with a swap of their 2021 first-round pick, when they drafted him No. 3 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft.

However, that was all but erased in 2022 when they selected Brock Purdy with the final pick of the draft. Other big names taken on Day 2 and 3 of the draft also have helped keep the ship afloat.

“They’ve been really good drafting guys on Day 3,” Pelissero said. “Brock Purdy, of course, picked there. Guys like George Kittle, Fred Warner, who were not first-round picks. Top of the draft, bang for the buck, hasn’t always been there.”

This season, it’s still too early to tell. But with the 49ers trading out of the first round, some fans have questioned their first 2026 selection after they took wide receiver De’Zhaun Stribling at No. 33 overall.

“I know that there was a minor uprising via the media and with fans because you take De’Zhaun Stribling with your second-round pick and that’s your starting point for your entire draft,” Pelissero continued.

The 49ers also have brought in All-Pro players Christian McCaffrey and Trent Williams via trades, utilizing draft capital to pull off massive moves – acquisitions that Pelissero believes have helped Lynch and Shanahan earn the security they currently have.

“I don’t think it’s a matter of, ‘Do you fire John Lynch?’ ” Pelissero said. “If anything, at some point, could John Lynch decide like, ‘I’ve had enough and I’m going to walk away. I’m going to go into an emeritus role.’ They’re structured differently, too, because Kyle has such a huge voice in everything they’re doing.”

Since 2017, the 49ers have the NFL’s 13th-best winning percentage at .550 (82-67). In the four seasons prior, San Francisco tied for just the 22nd-best winning mark with a .422 percentage (27-37).

The journey might not always be an easy one, but the grass is not always greener on the other side.
