Caleb Lohner will be a fascinating prospect to track going into Denver Broncos training camp.
The Broncos used a seventh-round pick to select Lohner, a basketball player-turned-tight end out of Utah, last year. After spending his rookie season on Denver’s practice squad, Lohner has looked “entirely different” (in a good way) this spring, according to coach Sean Payton.

Two other clubs were apparently interested in Lohner during his rookie season, but the tight end turned down opportunities to join an active roster to remain on the Broncos‘ practice squad in 2025.
“It was in the works, but I told them don’t even bother,’’ Lohner told Mike Klis of 9News. “[My agent] was the one who started it all (the decision to stay). I want to be here. You’ve got a veteran coach here (in Sean Payton). I was in his offensive system for almost a full year. Plus, I didn’t want to leave a team that was going for the Super Bowl and is going for the Super Bowl. Everyone in here all have the same goal. Win the Super Bowl. That’s what you play for. I didn’t want to leave that.”
Klis also reported that Lohner has worked with former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Donald Driver on catching and blocking this offseason, which might at least partially explain why he looks “entirely different” compared to last year. After selecting two tight ends in this year’s draft, Lohner will be competing in a very crowded room in 2026. He’s made a big jump, but it still remains to be seen if he’s improved enough to make the active roster in Year 2. Lohner will be a key player to track going into the summer.
