Jesse Minter is optimistic about Ravens DT Nnamdi Madubuike for 2026

Baltimore Ravens head coach Jesse Minter provided an encouraging update on Pro Bowl defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike on Wednesday, saying the veteran defender continues progressing well in his recovery after undergoing neck surgery earlier this offseason. Speaking during organized team activities, Minter praised Madubuike’s commitment to the rehabilitation process and expressed optimism about the defensive tackle’s trajectory heading into the 2026 season.

“He’s here a lot, getting a lot of work in, trending in a good direction,” Minter said.

The comments come roughly one month after ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Madubuike was expected to return this season following surgery related to a serious neck injury suffered during the opening weeks of the 2025 campaign.

Madubuike was placed on injured reserve with a neck injury before the Ravens’ 37-20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

There have been rumors of a potential retirement, but Madubuike has been optimistic, and a recent workout video made Ravens fans extremely happy about a 2026 return. Madubuike’s 21.5 sacks since the start of the 2023 season were the most by an NFL defensive tackle over that span before his injury. Madubuike, 27, had played in 55 straight games before injuring his neck in a 41-17 win over the Cleveland Browns on September 14.

The injury immediately created uncertainty about both the Ravens’ defensive front and Madubuike’s long-term future, particularly as speculation surfaced about a possible retirement due to the severity of the issue.

Madubuike, however, has consistently projected optimism throughout the recovery process. A recent offseason workout video showing the defensive tackle training aggressively generated excitement among Ravens fans eager to see one of the league’s premier interior defenders return to the field. Before the injury, Madubuike had emerged as one of football’s most disruptive defensive tackles. His 21.5 sacks since the beginning of the 2023 season ranked first among NFL defensive tackles over that span, highlighting the rare interior pass-rush production that helped elevate Baltimore’s defense into one of the league’s best units.

Madubuike recorded 13 sacks during the 2023 season, leading all NFL defensive tackles and earning Pro Bowl recognition, solidifying his status as one of the Ravens’ foundational defensive players. He followed that season by recording two sacks during Baltimore’s first two games in 2025 before the injury abruptly ended his campaign.

The Ravens rewarded Madubuike’s emergence before the 2024 season, signing the 27-year-old to a four-year contract extension reportedly worth $98 million.

Baltimore’s defensive front remained productive during Madubuike’s absence, thanks largely to breakout performances from veterans Travis Jones and John Jenkins. Both players took on greater responsibilities throughout the season and helped stabilize the interior of the defensive line during a difficult stretch.

Even with those contributions, Madubuike’s absence remained significant.

Few interior defenders combine explosiveness, power, and pass-rush consistency at the level Madubuike displayed over the previous two seasons, and Baltimore’s defense is considerably more disruptive when he is healthy and available.

The Ravens enter 2026 with championship expectations and a significant organizational transition following Jesse Minter’s arrival as head coach. Baltimore has continued reshaping portions of the roster while attempting to preserve the physical defensive identity that has defined the franchise for years.

Madubuike remains central to that identity.

His continued progress during offseason work represents one of the most important developments of Baltimore’s spring program as the Ravens continue building toward training camp later this summer.
