MAYFIELD, Ky. — Mayfield High School Cardinal Football has announced Stephen Hatchell as the team’s new head coach.
Hatchell has served as offensive coordinator for the Mayfield Cardinals since 2016. He started his career with the team in 2007 as the quarterback coach, then as offensive coordinator from 2008 to 2013.
For the 2014 and 2015 seasons, Hatchell moved to Georgetown, South Carolina, where he was a quarterback coach then offensive coordinator before moving back to Mayfield.
Hatchell said he is excited to lead the team.
“I would like to thank the hiring committee for giving me the opportunity to be the next head football coach at Mayfield High School. It is a responsibility I do not take lightly.”
Once a student-athlete himself, Hatchell played on the collegiate level. He was on the quarterback roster for Murray State University from 2001 to 2003, then for Campbellsville University from 2004 to 2005.
He also serves as vice principal at Mayfield High School. He and his wife, Tyler, have a daughter, Zoey, and a son, Zander.
“This program has a rich history, and I am excited to build upon the strong foundation already in place,” Hatchell said. “My family and I love this community and are thrilled to continue to serve our school and community.”
MHS Principal Matt McMain echoed that the school district, community and football program have a strong tradition of excellence.
“Coach Hatchell knows this legacy and is committed to maintaining that standard,” McMain said. “I am excited about the future of Mayfield football with him at the helm.”
Looking ahead, Hatchell said to players, parents and alumni that he “will work tirelessly to make you proud both on and off the field.”
“I am excited about the future of this program and my role in helping our young men become the best version of themselves,” Hatchell said. “Go Cardinals!”
