Pittsburgh Steelers fourth-year OLB Nick Herbig is at mandatory minicamp this week at the team’s South Side facility, but he’s not doing much as he conducts a soft “hold-in.”

Though he worked in individual drills Tuesday, Herbig reportedly didn’t participate in any team sessions as he seeks a contract extension from the franchise.

He’s in line for a massive pay day this summer coming off a career-high 7.5 sacks and 48 pressures in 636 snaps, but despite the hold-in, Herbig has one goal in mind moving forward.

“It’s my desire to be a Steeler for life,” Herbig told reporters, according to a tweet from The Athletic’s Mike DeFabo.

“I’m here. Getting right for the season, getting ready, keeping my body in shape. Staying ready to go,” Herbig said to reporters, according video via the Tribune-Review’s Chris Adamski’s on X.

Herbig’s line of thinking matches the comments that his agent, Joseph DiBenedetto, made in May on former Steelers defensive lineman Breiden Fehoko’s podcast.

The Steelers have a desire to get a deal done with Herbig, but it could be tricky. He plays a premium position and is very productive, yet T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith are ahead of him on the depth chart. Both those pass rushers are on big contracts, too, so it could be a lot of money tied up into one position.

But Herbig fits the Steelers’ draft-and-develop approach. He’s still relatively young, too, and continues to excel as a pass rusher when he’s on the field. It makes sense that they’d want to keep him around, and in a 3-4 defense with talent at all three levels, it makes sense Herbig wants to be here, too.

Football is a business at the end of the day though, and things out of Herbig’s control may have to happen to get that contract extension done. For now, he’s at least at the facility, going through individual drills and learning the defense under new coordinator Patrick Graham.

“Business is business. I’m a football player, I’m here for football,” Herbig added, according to Adamski’s video. “I try to keep business separated from football as much as I can.”

He seems to have the right mentality, and he’s saying the right things in public. Hopefully that leads to a deal getting done quickly, the Steelers locking in a key piece for a long time.
