The Dallas Cowboys are taking a cautious but optimistic approach with two key defensive pieces as they prepare for the 2026 season. Cornerback DaRon Bland and edge rusher Donovan Ezeiruaku continue to rehab from offseason surgeries, but head coach Brian Schottenheimer indicated both are on track to be ready when training camp opens.

“We’ve got a few guys that we’re going to be smart with,” Schottenheimer said during OTAs. “Donovan Ezeiruaku and DaRon Bland, guys like that, you’ll see them throughout the next couple weeks advance into more individual drills.” DaRon Bland missed the final three games of the 2025 regular season due to a left foot injury and underwent surgery on January 13. He also missed the start of the 2024 season after surgery for a stress fracture in the same foot.

Despite the history, the Cowboys are confident in his recovery. Donovan Ezeiruaku had surgery to repair a labrum tear in his hip. The young edge rusher has shown promise and the team wants to ensure he returns at full strength.

Schottenheimer emphasizes smart management

The Cowboys are prioritizing long-term health over pushing players during the voluntary OTAs period. Schottenheimer made it clear that both Bland and Ezeiruaku are progressing well and are expected to start training camp on the active roster rather than the PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list.

“Oh yeah, [they will be ready]. Absolutely, yeah,” Schottenheimer said. “Both guys are doing great. It’s more of us taking precautions and being smart.” The defensive duo has been participating in meetings and mental reps while gradually increasing their on-field work. The organization believes this measured approach will pay off once the pads come on in training camp.

Importance for the Cowboys defense

DaRon Bland emerged as a standout corner in recent seasons, known for his ball skills and coverage ability. His return will be crucial for a secondary looking to improve after a challenging 2025. Donovan Ezeiruaku adds athleticism and pass-rush potential to the edge group.

With the Cowboys investing in their defense this offseason, having both players available and healthy will be key to their ambitions in 2026. As OTAs continue, the Cowboys are focused on building chemistry and installing the new scheme while carefully managing the recoveries of key contributors.

The expectation is that both DaRon Bland and Donovan Ezeiruaku will be full participants when training camp begins, giving Dallas a stronger defensive foundation heading into the new season.
