There is a lot of buzz at this time of year. Organized team activities are in full swing, and Washington Commanders fans are expecting a major bounce-back after things fell so flat last season.
The mood has completely shifted. Complacency has been replaced by urgency. Players are getting the chance to impress, and there is a genuine purpose to put things right after a campaign that promised much before delivering almost nothing.
And for one unheralded rookie, he is making a strong case for involvement right out of the gate.
It was hard to overlook the speculation linking the Commanders to running back Jeremiyah Love in the 2026 NFL Draft. This was seen as the perfect fit, but it would be a nervous waiting game for general manager Adam Peters before he went on the clock at No. 7 overall.
Kaytron Allen is setting an early tone that the Commanders desperately needed
As it turned out, the Commanders had no shot. Love went No. 3 to the Arizona Cardinals. But in sixth-rounder Kaytron Allen, Washington may have found another hidden gem who could offer more than anyone anticipated.
Allen wasted no time in making his presence felt. He laid down a marker at Washington’s rookie minicamp, making it clear that he wasn’t here to play a bit-part role. His power, vision, and balance caught the eye, which is a trend that’s continuing at OTAs.
The former Penn State star does not look out of place among his veteran counterparts. Based on reports, he’s even outshining some of them.
There is a long way to go, and more difficult challenges lie ahead for Allen. Shining in shorts with no pads is the easy part. Doing the same in the tense training camp environment and in a typical game-day setting during the preseason will be the ultimate litmus test.
This won’t be lost on Allen.
He wants to challenge himself and push his teammates to work harder. He wants to rid the pre-draft perception of him being a short-yardage power option and nothing more. The relentless mindset is glaring, which is something the Commanders look for in all their new recruits from the college ranks.
Of course, tempering expectations would be wise. Jacory Croskey-Merritt and Rachaad White are expected to lead the running back charge. It’ll be a committee approach, but there is nothing to suggest Allen cannot fill the role vacated by Chris Rodriguez Jr., who signed for the Jacksonville Jaguars in free agency.
Allen wants more. And his early impact suggests he cannot be counted out by any stretch ot the imagination.
