New York Jets QB-Coach Duo Ranked Among NFL’s Worst originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The New York Jets have new faces representing the future of the team. First-time head Coach Aaron Glenn will lead the team from the sidelines, while newly-acquired quarterback Justin Fields will lead the team on the field.

After sporting underwhelming duos featuring head coach Robert Saleh and quarterbacks Zach Wilson and Aaron Rodgers, Jets fans are hopeful their new duo will bring better days to the franchise.

Unfortunately, Sports Illustrated’s Matt Verderame has a cynical opinion of the pairing. Verderame ranked every head coach and quarterback duo in the NFL for the upcoming season, and the Jets landed just one spot above the worst in the NFL at No. 31.

“Glenn is not only a first-year coach with New York, but it’s the first time he’s ever been in the head seat,” Verderame wrote. “Then there’s Fields, who is now on his third team in as many years and is justifiably viewed as a placeholder by most. Glenn might be a great long-term answer, but that’s impossible to project currently.”

Verderame has Glenn ranked as the No. 30 coach in the NFL, and Fields the No. 29 starting quarterback. The No. 31 overall ranking is a fall from grace for a Jets team that landed at No. 16 on last year’s ranking.

Verderame’s analysis of Fields being on his third NFL team may be a bit unfair. The former first-round selection spent the first three years of his NFL career surrounded by coaching staffs on the Chicago Bears that have continually failed to put together a winning product on the field.

Matt Eberflus’ team continued their struggles even without Fields in 2024, matching the Jets’ 5-12 record, resulting in Eberflus’ mid-season firing.

Meanwhile, 2024 was a bit kinder to Fields. Fields started the first six games of the season for the Pittsburgh Steelers while Russell Wilson rehabbed from an injury. Fields led the Steelers to a 4-2 record as a starter. Fields threw for 1,106 yards and five touchdowns with just one interceptions, while picking up an additional 289 yards and five touchdowns on the ground.

Glenn, meanwhile, is a bit of an unknown as a head coach. A highly revered defensive coordinator, it’s always tough to project and predict when someone goes from a coordinator role to a head coaching gig.
