It’s been a long, busy offseason for the Pittsburgh Steelers. They’ve made plenty of moves, ranging from the start of the league year, all the way up to a couple of extensions and signings this week. Through it all, analyst Gregg Rosenthal has been impressed with the moves Omar Khan has made.
“The secondary is all his. And we’ll kinda see on that, but, you know it’s Ramsey, and Brisker, and Jamel Dean. I bumped him maybe a few spots, just cause the Nick Herbig and Darnell Washington extensions over the last couple days are two of the most team-friendly, forward-thinking, best deals I’ve seen. He might be even higher if it wasn’t for the quarterback situation,” Rosenthal said Friday on his NFL Daily podcast. “I actually think he’s done an underrated job since he took over in Pittsburgh.”
It hasn’t all been sunshine and butterflies. Khan and the rest of the Steelers’ brass was criticized plenty for the wait on Aaron Rodgers. One which stretched all the way up until the weekend before OTAs. And on draft night, the Steelers were jumped in somewhat embarrassing fashion by Philadelphia for Makai Lemon, their primary target.
Aside from those, it’s hard to find much to complain about with the moves Omar Khan has made this offseason. While the wait on Rodgers was a bit exhausting, Khan brought back a starter who did a solid job for the most part last year. And in the third round, he found good value on a potential quarterback of the future in Drew Allar, who has some tremendous upside if he can put it all together. Even after missing out on Lemon, Khan was aggressive enough to move up for Germie Bernard in the second round.
Khan was able to restock the secondary as well. Jamel Dean will help form what should be a quality cornerback tandem with Joey Porter Jr., and Khan added depth options in Asante Samuel Jr. and Daylen Everette. At safety, Jaquan Brisker and Darnell Savage form experienced depth. Plus, there’s also the extensions handed out this week to Nick Herbig and Darnell Washington. The latter of which Rosenthal especially approves of.
There’s still some things on the docket, including potential extensions for Joey Porter Jr. and Keeanu Benton. But after a long offseason, Rosenthal is impressed with the moves Omar Khan was able to make.
