GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Packers opened their mandatory minicamp in Green Bay Tuesday, which is really just an extension of their Organized Team Activities.

It was hard to wipe the smile off the face of wide receiver Christian Watson after the Packers signed him to a lucrative contract extension last week.

“It was a crazy moment,” said Watson. “I didn’t have my wife or my son here with me. Still, it’s a surreal moment. Called my wife right away, called my mom right away.”

While followup reports say the four-year extension’s base value is $92 million, less than reported last week, Watson’s deal was lauded by Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur and quarterback Jordan Love.

“I think he’s definitely deserving,” said LaFleur. “I just think he embodies what we want to be about. I think he’s a team-first kind of guy. Like, never once over the course of four years, have I ever heard him complain about not getting the ball. And he does all the little things the right way. I think he handles himself the right way. I think he’s a great teammate. He busts his butt every day when he comes in the building.”

“I’m happy about it,” added Love. “I think anytime anybody gets a contract extension, it’s great news. It’s just testament to the work he puts in, the type of player he is, who he is in this locker room.”

For Watson, the security comes on the heels of a contract extension for fellow Packers receiver Jayden Reed.

“It’s kind of a dream since you’re a little kid,” said Watson. “It’s finally in front of you, it’s a different feeling. I kind of just took the whole weekend to soak it all in. It means the world to me, for sure. I’m going to be thankful every single day that I get to step out on that field, to be honest. I’m going to go out there every day with the mindset to earn that contract. I’m sure you know, that within the contract, there’s even more things for me to earn and continue to find ways to continue to prove myself.”

Josh Jacobs did practice with the Packers on Tuesday while law authorities investigate whether to charge him with domestic violence. He was not in the locker room during the time reporters were allowed to be there.
