Tank Dell was talking about a Super Bowl ring, and he went straight there, past every milestone a Texan might reasonably claim first.

“You know, our number one goal is to be the first team to put a bull on the ring,” Dell said recently, laying out Houston’s ambitions for the upcoming season.

Players across the league declare championship intentions every offseason. Coming from a Texan, the line lands differently.

A franchise still chasing its first

Houston has been in the NFL since 2002 and has never reached a Super Bowl. The Texans have never appeared in an AFC Championship Game. They have won playoff games, claimed division titles, and built rosters good enough to do real damage in January, and the final step has stayed out of reach every year.

Dell skipped the smaller checkpoints, the playoffs, the AFC South, a conference title, and went straight to a Texans logo on a Super Bowl ring.

Coming off a 12-5 year and a top-ranked defense

The talk follows a 12-5 season that ended with a road win in Pittsburgh and a Divisional Round exit in New England. Houston’s defense finished second in the league in points allowed, with Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson Jr. combining for 27 sacks off the edge.

C.J. Stroud is still the centerpiece. DeMeco Ryans has the culture humming. And Anderson, asked whether the Texans carry Super Bowl expectations, did not hedge: “Most definitely.” He added that Houston has “Super Bowl-caliber players all over the field.”

Dell’s road back

The receiver is saying this after the hardest stretch of his career. He missed all of 2025 recovering from a knee injury suffered in December 2024, a dislocation that tore three ligaments. He could be focused on simply getting back onto the field. Instead, he is talking about delivering something Houston has never had.

What Houston still hasn’t done

Believing in a Super Bowl and winning one sit a long way apart. The AFC is stacked. Houston still has not won a game beyond the Divisional Round, let alone strung together a full postseason run.

For most of the franchise’s existence, the Texans were the team trying to catch up. Now the players are talking about the ring.
