The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Jack Sawyer in the fourth-round of the 2025 NFL Draft. It was a relatively surprising move, but Sawyer has fit right into the Steel City. On Thursday, he spoke to the media and praised the Steelers coaches and veterans.

Sawyer, along with his teammate Will Howard, is fresh off of a national championship run. Shortly after Ohio State’s championship victory, the former Buckeye declared for the NFL Draft. Since being selected by Pittsburgh, the Ohio native has made the most of his opportunity.

“It’s been awesome. [Coach Tomlin] is definitely a players coach,” Sawyer said of coming to Pittsburgh and working with head coach Mike Tomlin. “[He’s] competitive, you know, likes to get the energy going … I love it so far.”

Like his previous head coach, Tomlin has a lengthy resume that includes a championship pedigree. “He’s been one of the best coaches in the league for a long time … his resume speaks for himself.” Sawyer said of Tomlin’s tenure in the NFL.

Not only did Sawyer praise Tomlin, but also enjoyed working with the veterans in the locker room. “It’s good to get out here and be with the guys that have been here for a while,” Sawyer said when asked about working alongside veteran defenders. “I think we’re all excited and all of us are thankful … the whole locker room is great.”

Veterans who stood out to Sawyer included two from his position group: Alex Herbig and Jeremiah Moon.

“Alex, Herbig, Moon, and all those guys have been great for me already,” Sawyer said of his teammates. “It’s been a good experience so far.”

As the Steelers transition to the next phase of offseason workouts, it appears the rookie edge rusher has fit in well with his teammates.

While T.J. Watt is not present at OTA’s in light of contract negotiations, it is clear veteran leadership is still strong in the locker room.
