When you look at Jonathan Greenard’s 2025 season, most immediately start with the sack total. In doing so, some will wonder if the Eagles are paying for a declining player. 

First off, no; secondly, the sack totals completely miss the point. 

Howie Roseman and the Eagles have never built the defensive line philosophy around raw sack production. 

The Eagles value chaos, disruption, pressure, pass-rush win rate, time to pressure, and the impact all of that has on the play. 

Stats are great, but the Eagles dive much deeper, and that is exactly why Jonathan Greenard fits this defense so well.

The Film

When watching Greenard’s pass-rushing reps, one thing is abundantly clear: he is being accounted for by offensive coordinators on every play. 

Opposing OCs regularly have their RBs chip Greenard to extend their QBs’ time to throw before allowing them to run their routes. Adding extra protection is a show of respect and fear, and it tells you everything you need to know about how they view him as a player. 

Some have stated they have concerns because he is not a typical edge who beats you with speed-to-power, but his pressures usually arrive very quickly, and that matters. And he has many ways to make it happen.

Jonathan has a high motor, an explosive first step, good bend, instincts, and an evolving pass-rushing plan. 

Greenard stacks his pass-rushing moves into a single attack and easily flows from a swim, rip, or club in a single sequence. He also has a nasty spin move and a solid bull rush. But his active hands always stand out when watching the film. 

His football IQ shows up with a polished attack that doesn’t only rely on speed, but rather on elite counters. And that approach allows him to consistently pressure the quarterback.

Sacks

Sacks are a finishing stat, pressures are a process stat. 

Greenard is a disruptor who consistently affects the quarterback’s timing with pressures, hurries, and hits. And that is why sack totals can be a misleading evaluation. 

Would JG like to have some plays back from 2025 that lowered his sack totals? Absolutely. A few opportunities slipped through his hands, literally. But the havoc he creates remained all year. 

He routinely won his one-on-one matchups, and the pressure forced QBs off their mark. While the sacks didn’t pile up, the Eagles believe those numbers will normalize again. History suggests so as well. 

Philadelphia’s defensive philosophy has long been built around waves of pressure and forcing quarterbacks to speed up their process. Greenard fits perfectly into that structure.

The Philadelphia Eagles appear desirous of bringing back Dallas Goedert & trading for Jonathan Greenard.

Attempting to complete this has been the strangest situation to play out during Howie Roseman’s tenure.

The disruption, toughness, and willingness to embrace physical football absolutely fit Vic Fangio’s identity and the defense the Eagles want.

The front office has long had interest in Greenard, and after losing Jaelan Phillips to Carolina on a massive four-year, $120 million deal, they pivoted back to Jonatahan. 

But make no mistake, he is not a consolation prize, but rather a calculated signing to fit their style of play, even if his name does not dominate national headlines. 

Conclusion

Jonathan Greenard is an “analytics darling.”

I referred to him during free agency season as an “analytics darling”, and I still believe that label fits. The Eagles front office values players who consistently win reps, generate pressure, and impact games beyond surface-level statistics.

Jonathan Greenard checks every one of those boxes.

In short, some organizations chase sack totals; the Philadelphia Eagles chase disruption.

And Jonathan Greenard disrupts everything.
