JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jaguars had a remarkable turnaround in Liam Coen’s first season as head coach and scored a franchise-record 474 points last season, with Grant Udinski as the offensive coordinator.

Jacksonville went from 4-13 to 13-4, won the AFC South Division and ended the season as a Top 10 scoring offense in the NFL. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence set a franchise record, scoring 38 touchdowns.

“It’s not how much more I know because it’s way more than what I know of the offense, but it’s really being intentional every day because that’s the trap is to go through the motions just because you know the offense,” Lawrence said. “I think our focus as a whole unit has been really good on the details and really mastering all the little things.”

Coen is the engineer behind the system. He comes from the coaching tree of Sean McVay, one of the smartest offensive minds in the league. Coen calls the plays for Jacksonville, and his right-hand man is the 30-year-old Udinski.

“We’re definitely ahead of where we were last year. A lot closer to maybe the season and the way those guys were doing at the end of the year,” Coen said.

Udinski said the team is working to try to improve on what it did well and the areas in which the team fell short of its standard.

“So, it never really stops in terms of our expectation for growth and trying to get better,” Udinski said.

After just one season as offensive coordinator, he had interviews for the head coaching vacancies with the Cleveland Browns and the Buffalo Bills. If he had been hired for one of those jobs, he would have been the youngest head coach in the modern NFL era.

“I was honored to be able to be considered for those opportunities, and really, it’s a testament to the work that our team and our offense has put in to kind of raise my status and elevate me to even be considered,” Udinski said.

Udinski got his rise in Minnesota under Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell, another disciple of the McVay coaching tree, and he raved about Udinski.

“He’s so unbelievably gifted in his ability to look at the game, study the game, and then articulate it,” O’Connell said during the annual NFL meetings on March 30. “His future is so bright. We’re probably all going to be working for him eventually, so it’s just a matter of time.”

Life in the NFL moves fast. If the Jaguars have another great season offensively, Udinski could be on the short list of heading coaching candidates heading into the 2027 season.
