GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – ECU Hall of Famer Chris Johnson has revealed he has been diagnosed with ALS.
Johnson rushed for more than 4,200 yards and scored 42 touchdowns during his career with the Pirates before being selected in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft.
He went on to play 10 NFL seasons with the Tennessee Titans, New York Jets, and Arizona Cardinals. In 2009, he rushed for more than 2,000 yards and set an NFL record with more than 2,500 yards from scrimmage in a single season.
Johnson now uses a voice-generation device to communicate after losing many of his physical abilities because of the disease.
“First, I want people to know that I’m still me. ALS has changed what my body can do, but it hasn’t changed who I am,” Johnson said.
Following Johnson’s announcement, East Carolina released a statement supporting the former Pirate.
“Chris is one of the best players in East Carolina University history and someone who inspired Pirate Nation through his determination, work ethic, and perseverance throughout his life,” the university said. “While this diagnosis presents an unimaginable challenge, anyone who knows Chris understands the strength, courage, and competitive spirit he possesses.”
