Freeman’s Tomlin Story

Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman opted against making a run at the NFL and potentially replacing Mike Tomlin. Instead, he offered a story of his interaction with Tomlin after Freeman replaced Brian Kelly as the Fighting Irish’s head coach.

“He got my number from someone and reached out,” Freeman told Heyward on the Not Just Football podcast. “And said, ‘Hey Marcus, this is Mike T. I just want you to have my number. I’m here if you ever need anything.’”

“He just wants you to know that somebody is in your corner”

Coaching is a fraternity and those who have the job know how difficult it can be. Especially in places like Pittsburgh or South Bend where expectations are so high.

Freeman has gone on to become one of college football’s elite head coaches. After resigning from Pittsburgh, Tomlin joined NBC Sports as a Sunday Night Football analyst this year.

Heath Miller Throwback

Dave Bryan shared a fun throwback on Friday to remember draft day 2005 when the Steelers selected Virginia TE Heath Miller in the first round. Check out the clip below.

“He can catch the football, adequate blocker. His ability to find open areas, catch the football at 6’5, 255. Presenting that big target for Ben Roethlisberger…they got 16 total receptions, that’s it, from the tight end spot all of last year,” Mel Kiper Jr. said, calling Miller a “perfect fit” in Pittsburgh.

Kiper was spot on. Miller became an instant asset to the offense and one of Roethlisberger’s all-time favorite targets. He alone more than doubled Pittsburgh’s tight end receiving production from the year before, catching 39 passes as a rookie for 459 yards and six touchdowns. His steady and unselfish play made him a fan favorite.

Miller spent all 11 NFL seasons in Pittsburgh and exited as the franchise’s most productive tight end.

Fautanu Engaged

Pittsburgh Steelers offensive tackle Troy Fautanu shared on Instagram he’s now an engaged man. He shared a photo of his fiancée, Carys, showing off her new ring.

You can find more photos here.

Per this 2021 Instagram post, it appears the two had been dating since high school. Shortly after being drafted, Fautanu’s name went viral after his then-girlfriend shared a video of Fautanu signing a Steelers jersey for her little brother on his birthday.

Fautanu is only entering his third NFL season but turns 26 in October. He’s slated to be Pittsburgh’s starting left tackle. If he continues to play well, the Steelers are certain to exercise his fifth-year option for the 2028 season.

Fautanu isn’t the only Steeler to have engagement/wedding news this offseason. Last month, TE Pat Freiermuth got married to his wife, Jill.
