It seems like nearly every NFL trade rumor eventually involves the San Francisco 49ers. After all, the team is looking to keep pace with the Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks in what could be the NFL’s toughest division.

Most speculation has centered on the 49ers adding another pass rusher, especially after the Rams acquired Myles Garrett from Cleveland. However, one Browns-focused outlet has identified San Francisco as a potential landing spot for another Cleveland standout: five-time Pro Bowl cornerback Denzel Ward.

Although the 49ers have expressed confidence in their secondary, adding another defensive back—whether at cornerback or safety—remains a possibility. San Francisco’s defense ranked 25th in the NFL in passing yards allowed last season, making additional help on the back end an understandable consideration.

Dylan Feltovich of Browns Wire believes the 49ers’ lack of a proven top cornerback makes Ward an intriguing trade target.

“Despite signing two proven cornerbacks this offseason in Nate Hobbs and Jack Jones, the 49ers’ defensive back room does not feature a true, established top cornerback,” Feltovich wrote.

That assessment overlooks Deommodore Lenoir, the 49ers’ $17.8 million-a-year starting outside cornerback. He is expected to remain a key piece of the secondary for years to come.

While Feltovich may not think much of the 49ers’ current group of cornerbacks, he names two players from that group that could serve as part of a trade package.

“Luckily for the Browns, San Francisco has multiple young playmakers on the roster who could be included in a trade, which fits general manager Andrew Berry’s mindset of acquiring unproven players to fill the void left by Ward, such as 2024 second-round pick Renardo Green and 2025 third-round pick Upton Stout,” Feltovich added.

Ward (5-11, 190) was selected by the Browns out of Ohio State with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft and has spent his entire NFL career in Cleveland.

The veteran cornerback appeared in and started 15 games during the 2025 season, recording 39 tackles (29 solo), two tackles for loss, nine passes defensed, and one interception.

Over eight NFL seasons, Ward has played in 110 games with 107 starts, totaling 361 tackles, 104 passes defensed, 18 interceptions, four defensive touchdowns, four forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries, and half a sack.

While there’s no indication the Browns are actively shopping Ward, his name continues to surface in trade speculation.
