Golf action for the week got started June 29 at the Key Royale Club, 700 Key Royale Drive, Holmes Beach, with the men’s weekly Stableford system or quota-points match. Bill Shuman took first with a plus-3, a point ahead of second-place finisher Ken Nagengast.

Members played a nine-hole scramble July 2 and the team of Mike Cusato, Nelson Eagle and Quentin Talbert lapped the field with a 5-under-par 27. The team of Chuck Patrick, Gary Razze, Earl Ritchie and Bill Shuman were alone in second at 1-under-par 31.

The club held its annual Fourth of July scramble to close out the week.

The team of Chuck Patrick, Charlie Porter and Terry Schaefer matched the 2-under-par 30 carded by the team of Tom Nelson, Dave and Deb Richardson and Steve Vasbinder for a tie for first place. Second went to the team of Cecil Harrelson, Dennis Kitterman, Dani Kitterman and Russ Stewart.

Vasbinder won the men’s long-drive contest while Rene Chapman won the women’s long-drive contest. Karen Michell won closest-to-the-pin on the eighth hole, while Eagle won it on the third hole. Dave Richardson won the men’s putting contest, while Janet Razze won the women’s division.

 

Summer football underway at center

There’s a full slate of adult flag football games in the summer league at the Center of Anna Maria Island, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria.

Action July 2 kicked off with Pavina Bros. Window Cleaning rolling to a 46-26 victory over The Fish Guy Aquarium Services behind seven touchdown passes from Dallas Buchholtz, including TD catches for Christian McPhearson, Steven Pavina, Luke Naeher and Kiatrell Zachery.

Miguel Rodriguez threw four TD passes with three of them going to Tim Holly, while Erica Nielsen added another touchdown grab in the loss.

The second game of the evening saw Salty Printing edge Moss Air 27-20. Quarterback Tuna McCracken played a big role, finishing with two TD passes and a TD run. Tyler Brewer also had a big day, finishing with 12 receptions, including two for TDs, while also scoring on an interception return for the victory.

Jonathan Moss threw for three TDs to lead Moss Air, which also received two TD catches from Jesse Skipper and one from Logan Heath. Defensively, Moss paced Moss Air with 11 flag pulls and an interception, while Rex Kesten finished with two interceptions in the loss.

Luxury Services cruised to a 41-20 victory over USA Fence in the third game of the evening behind six TD passes from Chase Richardson, including two each to Haley Larsson and Connor Morse who also added a 2-point conversion. Travis Bates and Karri Stephens each chipped in a touchdown catch in the victory.

Ira Serrant’s three TD passes paced USA Fence, which also received two TD catches from Jacob Rairigh and one TD from David Lopez in the loss.

Cruz Rodriguez threw seven touchdown passes, including two each to Evelyn and Zack Long to lead Solid Rock Construction to a 46-14 route over Fishing with Salty in the fourth game of the night. Zach Anabtawi, Corey Jacques and Chris Johnson each added TD catches in the Solid Rock victory.

Dominick Otteni threw for one score and ran for another to lead Fishing with Salty, while Alex Bodoya finished with one TD catch in the loss.

The last game of the night saw Mi-Box edge Moss Builders 20-14 behind three TD passes from Donte Filletti to three receivers. Alex Zettler, Jessica Kelly and Jaden Grant each had a TD catch in the victory.

James Roadman threw TD passes to Audrey Guess and Cashton Yant to lead Moss Builders in the loss.

 

Youth soccer continues in the gym

Youth soccer is three weeks into its summer season at the community center, and the action kicked off in the gym for the 8-10 division June 29 with the Gitt Team edging G.I. Bins 4-3 thanks to a hat trick from Ruthie Ball. Ariyah Carlton added one goal and Titus Moss came through with 24 saves to help preserve the victory for Gitt.

Caden Greenlee had a pair of goals and an assist for G.I. Bins, which also received a goal and four saves from Jeremiah Raulersosn in the loss.

Next up, Leading Edge Investments cruised to an 11-6 victory over USA Fence behind five goals and two assists from Nolan Huffman and four goals and two assists from William Cliburn. Brooks Huffman added a goal and Benjamin Cliburn finished with nine saves in the victory.

Finn Viehman scored six goals and made six saves to lead USA Fence, which also received 13 saves from Jaxon Dominis in the loss.

The 11-13 division saw action June 30 with 82 West Home Inspections cruising past Solid Rock Construction 8-4. Luca Viehman led the way with six goals, while Hudson West and Colton Dominis each scored one. Joseph Caballero and Everett Hood combined to make 13 saves in the victory.

Callin Westfall scored two goals and Samuel Raulerson and Conley Paul each scored one goal. Elijah Roadman made 11 saves for Solid Rock in the loss.

The second and last match of the evening saw GML Coatings edge RAK’s Wings ‘N Things 5-3. Wes Saxon scored three goals and Rafael Price and Mylo Lee each scored one. Kyle Castagna helped preserve the victory with 12 saves in goal.

Renan Kesten scored two goals and Ellison Maynard added a goal for Wings ‘N Things, which also received eight saves in the loss.

 

Horseshoe news

Horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall pits, 10005 Gulf Drive, July 1 saw two teams advance from pool play to settle up in a playoff.

Tom Betty and Gersey Fernandes held on for a 22-20 victory over Tom Farrington and Steve Kriebel. Fernandes had the hot hand, throwing three double ringers to help his team to a spot in the winner’s circle.

Play gets underway at 9 a.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays at the pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m., followed by random team selection.

There is no charge to play and all are welcome.

Manatee 5K returns to beach

The Run Manatee 5K Series is back on the beach.

Presented by RWP Runs and organized in partnership with Manatee County, the series will feature a run at Bradenton Beach’s Coquina Beach at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, July 11.

Runners can expect family-fun splash zones, adult beverages and a picturesque sunset backdrop.

Another run will be held in November at Rye Preserve.

A race already was run at Tom Bennett Park.

A percentage of the proceeds from the Coquina Beach race will benefit the Center of Anna Maria Island.

Youth golf tees up at KRC

The Center of Anna Maria Island is offering a three-week youth golf clinic at the Key Royale Club, 700 Key Royale Drive, Holmes Beach, this summer, giving kids from kindergarten through ninth-grade a chance to hit the links with a pro.

Coach Brendan Palmer, assistant golf professional from IMG Academy in Bradenton, will lead the sessions 9-11 a.m. Wednesdays — July 15, July 22 and July 29.

Each week is a separate session with limited enrollment — 13 spots per week — and participants must register individually for each date.

The cost is $55 for members and $65 for nonmembers.
