One of the NFL’s biggest storylines entering training camp is the Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback room. More specifically, all eyes are on the competition between J.J. McCarthy and Kyler Murray for the starting job. So far, Murray has emerged as the frontrunner.

Even so, Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell made it clear that the eventual winner must do one thing above all else: set the standard for winning. O’Connell joined The Dan Patrick Show to explain what he’s looking for from his quarterbacks.

“I’m not really familiar with a closed competition,” O’Connell said. “I’ve heard that everyone’s fascinated with that aspect of it, but here’s what I would say. … Really the goal going into this offseason was to elevate the quarterback position because when we have a certain standard of play that we feel like we have multiple guys in that room that we feel are capable of reaching that standard, the Minnesota Vikings win football games.”

O’Connell previously worked with Kirk Cousins and Sam Darnold as the Vikings’ head coach. The franchise drafted McCarthy in 2024 with the expectation that he would become its quarterback of the future, but he has yet to establish himself at the NFL level.

That could still change, but McCarthy has not consistently shown the traits needed to succeed as an NFL starter. Murray has his flaws, but his upside remains undeniable. Whichever quarterback wins the job must accomplish exactly what O’Connell emphasized:

Win football games.

The Vikings finished 9-8 in 2025, five wins fewer than they recorded in 2024. At one point during that 2024 campaign, they were in contention for the No. 1 seed in the NFC.

Much of that success stemmed from Darnold’s resurgence. He parlayed that breakout season into a lucrative contract with the Seattle Seahawks during the 2025 free agency period. The Seahawks, of course, went on to win Super Bowl LX.

Now, O’Connell needs his 2026 starting quarterback to replicate the level of play Darnold delivered in 2024. If McCarthy can make that leap, it would be the ideal outcome for the organization.

However, Murray also has an opportunity to seize the QB1 job. One of his former teammates believes this may be his best remaining chance to start for a team as talented as the Vikings.

The question now is simple: Who will set the standard during training camp and earn the Vikings’ starting quarterback job for Week 1?
