He responded to that contract with a strong year, racking up 82 catches for 600 yards and eight touchdowns. Ferguson’s 82 receptions ranked third among all tight ends, as did his touchdown total.
Ferguson did not crack the top 10 but was listed as an honorable mention. While the Cowboys’ tight end was largely complimented for his skill set, but an anonymous NFC scout identified one key weakness of Ferguson.
“He’s really solid all around, high catch volume, tough, competes in the run game,” the scout said. “His problem is fumbling. We targeted trying to get the ball loose when we played him.”
The scout certainly isn’t wrong. Fumbles have been an issue for Ferguson over the last couple of years. While he didn’t fumble in the first two seasons of his career, Ferguson has put the ball on the ground seven times over the last two years. His three fumbles in 2025 were tied for the most in the NFL among tight ends and his four fumbles in 2024 led all tight ends.
However, despite his issues with ball security, Ferguson is still one of Dak Prescott’s most dependable targets. He was second on the team in receiving touchdowns last year and his 102 targets were the third-most behind the star wideout duo of CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens. Ferguson also led the Cowboys in catch rate by a large margin in 2025, hauling in over 80% of his targets.
If Ferguson can solve his fumbling problem, he’d likely solidify himself as one of the most well-rounded tight ends in the NFL this year. Given the fact he’s received over 100 targets each of the last two seasons Prescott has remained healthy, Ferguson will get the opportunity to do just that in 2026.
