Les Snead and Sean McVay have done an excellent job rebuilding the Los Angeles Rams’ offensive line over the last few years. Rob Havenstein has been the only constant since McVay was hired in 2017 but the additions of Alaric Jackson, Kevin Dotson and Steve Avila have reshaped the O-line.
Offensive tackle has become a strength with Jackson on the left side and Havenstein maintaining his status as a top right tackle, even as he approaches the end of his career.
Pro Football Focus recently ranked the top 32 offensive tackles in the NFL and both of the Rams’ starters made the list. But who ranked higher: Jackson or Havenstein?
Jackson was slotted nine spots higher than Havenstein, coming in at No. 19 overall in PFF’s rankings.
After earning PFF overall grades of 64.1 and 66.6 in the previous two seasons and ranking outside the top 30 in both years, Jackson finished the 2024 campaign with an 18th-ranked 78.4 PFF overall grade. His 4.5% pressure rate allowed was also a career high and ranked 18th at the position.
Havenstein was No. 28 on PFF’s list, with the writer Zoltan Buday citing that the veteran’s best play is likely behind him.
The 33-year-old Havenstein’s best years are probably behind him. Despite earning an 80.0-plus PFF overall grade in three out of four seasons between 2018 and 2021, the Wisconsin product has failed to reach that threshold since.
In 2024, he recorded a 75.8 PFF overall grade — his second-lowest mark over the past five seasons and the 25th-ranked figure among offensive tackles. Havenstein remains among the better run-blocking offensive tackles after posting a 79.6 PFF run-blocking grade in 2024 to rank 13th among offensive tackles.
It’s fair to say the Rams have one of the best starting tandems in the league, but there’s little doubt about which one tops the list. The Eagles have the No. 1 overall tackle in Jordan Mailata and the fifth-ranked tackle in Lane Johnson, clearly putting themselves ahead of the class at that position.
The Rams will likely have a new right tackle next season if Havenstein retires or leaves in free agency, but for now, their two-man team is better than most across the NFL.
