Shane Gillis made comedy history at Lincoln Financial Field on Friday night, but the record-setting show could not officially begin until Jason Kelce gave the crowd a familiar Philadelphia welcome.
The former Eagles center took the stage and led the packed stadium in an “E-A-G-L-E-S” chant, immediately turning the home of the Birds into something resembling a football Sunday. Kelce then brought out Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill, giving Gillis’ massive comedy event an opening rooted in the city’s sports and music culture.
Gillis sold 76,212 tickets for the July 17 show, setting the Guinness World Record for the most tickets sold to a comedy performance by a solo comedian. Guinness World Records adjudicator Andy Glass verified the official sales total, according to Variety.
The performance was already billed as the largest headlining show of Gillis’ career. Lincoln Financial Field promoted the event as a one-night appearance featuring Gillis and a lineup of special guests, with the show scheduled from 8 to 11 p.m.
Gillis was joined by a deep lineup of performers, including Big Jay Oakerson and Dave Chappelle, among others. The surprise format added to the scale of a show that felt less like a traditional stand-up appearance and more like a major Philadelphia entertainment event.
Kelce was the natural choice to begin it.
Although he retired following the 2023 season, the six-time first-team All-Pro remains one of the most recognizable and beloved figures in Eagles history. His ability to generate an immediate response from a Philadelphia crowd has never depended on whether he is wearing a helmet and shoulder pads.
Friday night provided another example.
Kelce’s chant connected Gillis’ show to the building’s primary identity before Meek Mill’s appearance expanded the celebration beyond football. Gillis, a Pennsylvania native and longtime Eagles supporter, has frequently incorporated his Philadelphia sports allegiance into his public persona. His Linc appearance was announced as the largest solo show of his career months before the record was confirmed.
The historic event took place under unusually difficult environmental conditions. Philadelphia and the rest of Pennsylvania were operating under a Code Purple air-quality alert as smoke from Canadian wildfires moved across the region.
A Code Purple designation means the air is considered unhealthy for everyone, not only children, older adults, and those with respiratory conditions. City officials urged residents to avoid unnecessary outdoor activity, and some local attractions and community events were canceled or altered because of the conditions.
The smoke also affected other sporting events in the region. The start of a Phillies-Mets game was moved earlier because of the worsening air, while players later described irritation and visibility issues during the game. Gillis’ show continued as scheduled, and more than 76,000 people filled the stadium to witness a landmark comedy performance.
Before Gillis, Chappelle, Oakerson and the other guests delivered their sets, however, Kelce made sure the crowd remembered exactly where the historic night was taking place. At Lincoln Financial Field, even the largest comedy show ever staged by a solo performer began with the Eagles.
