IOWA CITY — Former prolific donor for Iowa Athletics, Will Moon, died July 16, Iowa announced Friday afternoon. Moon was 64 years old.
Moon was a graduate of Iowa in 1983, and his family helped establish the Iowa 80 truck stop, now widely known as the World’s Largest Truckstop and the CAT Scale company.
“”Will was one of the kindest, most genuine people you could ever meet, and his love for the Hawkeyes was unwavering,” Iowa Athletics Director Beth Goetz said in the university’s announcement. “His generosity and loyalty helped shape Iowa Athletics, but it was the relationships he built and the way he cared for others that will be remembered most. He was a dear friend and truly part of the Hawkeye family.”
Moon and his wife, Renee, were also key influences in helping establish multiple transformative programs for Iowa Athletics — including support for the Kinnick Edge Campaign for the north end zone.
The Moon family also created an endowment fund for Hawkeye football operations and founded the Will and Renee Moon Excellence Fund for “unrestricted athletic initiatives.”
Iowa Athletics permanently named its football head coaching position after the Moon family in thanks for their support. The Moon Family Head Coach title is used by current head coach Kirk Ferentz and will continue being used moving forward.
“I was very saddened to hear about Will’s passing,” Ferentz said in the announcement. “Will and his wife Renee have been very generous in their support of our program and Hawkeye athletics. Hawkeye student-athletes will benefit from their gifts for years to come. I truly enjoyed and appreciated my time spent with Will. On behalf of our entire program, I send my heartfelt condolences to Renee and the entire Moon family.”
According to the announcement, visitation will be on July 20 at Runge Mortuary from 4-8 p.m. A funeral service will be at Calvary Church in Walcott, Iowa at 10 a.m. on July 21.
