Drake Maye has already blown all expectations out of the water.

After being the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, he’s already ranked higher in ESPN’s QB rankings than the two guys who went above him, Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels. And the New England Patriots‘ quarterback isn’t done rising yet.

He just led the Pats to a Super Bowl appearance, but that might be just the beginning.

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer sees an even higher ceiling for Maye. He thinks he can be the best player in the NFL.

“I think there could be a point in two, three, four years where we’re talking about him and he’s the best player in football,” Breer wrote recently. “I think his ceiling is that high.”

There are a couple of fun ways to contextualize this.

One is that Maye would ascend to a point that Tom Brady previously stood. The Pats had the great fortune to have the GOAT leading the way for so long.

Maye might never catch up to Brady’s level, which would be almost impossible, but to give New England another QB atop the NFL would be remarkable.

It also has some overlap with Josh Allen, the Buffalo Bills’ superstar quarterback. He’s a player that has a lot of similarity to Maye in terms of athleticism, size and arm talent.

Allen is considered by many to be the current best player in football.

It would be fitting if in a short time, Maye could overtake Allen and be the new king not just of the AFC East (which the Patriots already won last season) and became the king of the whole NFL.

Of course, Allen hasn’t even reached a Super Bowl. Maye has already done that.

The sky is truly the limit for Maye.
