Over the last few months, we’ve talked ad nauseam about the Minnesota Vikings quarterback competition between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy. From their injury histories to inconsistent play, both sides have interesting arguments for why they should be the starter.
We still don’t know when the Vikings will name a starting quarterback, nor do we know how exactly they will go about choosing the guy. When you think about what the next starting quarterback will need to have, there is one aspect we haven’t discussed nearly enough.
Vikings roster could have a major impact on deciding the starting quarterback
What will the Vikings’ quarterback decision be? Simply put, it could be determined by the roster itself. Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer made an interesting point. The win-now nature of the roster, with their best players all in their primes, could force Kevin O’Connell’s hand.
“Minnesota’s core—Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, Christian Darrisaw, T.J. Hockenson, Andrew Van Ginkel and Byron Murphy Jr. at the center of it—is chock full of players squarely in the prime of their careers. That’s why the Vikings couldn’t possibly do again what they did last year and push all their chips in on McCarthy. For the sake of all those cornerstone players, Minnesota had to create options at quarterback, and did that in landing Murray in March.”
It’s an interesting concept that makes a lot of sense. The Vikings do have the workings of a win-now team, which was one of the reasons why they drafted a quarterback at 10th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. The theory was if he played average football, it would elevate the Vikings to a potential Super Bowl contender. They got that and then some from Sam Darnold, but didn’t from McCarthy.
When you look at the entire situation, it’s certainly a potential factor. Don’t sleep on it.
