The Patriots placed outside linebacker Harold Landry III and tight end C.J. Dippre on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, and running back Terrell Jennings on the Non-Football Injury (NFI) list Tuesday.
Landry, Dippre and Jennings have not been cleared to practice, though any or all of them can be activated once they pass a physical. The Patriots will open training camp on Saturday.
Veterans are required to report to the facility Friday at the latest, though some players, including those rehabbing from injuries and quarterback Drake Maye, are already back in the building.
Landry suffered a knee injury last October that hampered him for the rest of the season. He nonetheless led the team with 8.5 sacks. This spring, Landry missed all of OTAs and minicamp to rehab. Landry, who turned 30 years old last month, has played seven NFL seasons and is in the second year of a three-year, $43.5 million deal with the Patriots.
Patriots coach Mike Vrabel indicated the team would manage Landry’s physical workload in the spring and summer.
“Harold has played a lot of football, and so we just have to try to — this is all part of everyone has a little different plan,” Vrabel said in June. “I think you (reporters) understand that, having spent a year with us and kind of how we operate. So, (Landry) is very involved, very heavily involved in the meetings and the workouts and in a leadership role. For him to take reps right now in the spring, I feel like is unnecessary.
“We will just keep working to make sure that he is ready to go when we need him.”
Jennings played in seven games and rushed for one touchdown last year. He projects to be the Patriots’ No. 3 running back, pending an upcoming position battle with Lan Larison and rookies Jam Miller and Myles Montgomery. Dippre spent most of last season on the practice squad and appeared in two regular-season games.
