Detroit Lions TE Sam LaPorta fully cleared after herniated disc surgery ahead of training camp, per reports

  • July 22, 2026

DETROIT – Detroit Lions Pro Bowl tight end Sam LaPorta has been fully cleared to return for training camp after recovering from a herniated disc, according to reports.

ESPN senior NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler posted on X on Tuesday (July 21) that LaPorta was cleared earlier this month, putting him on track to participate in training camp.

The Lions will determine how much work he receives during camp, but he is expected to be a full participant.

LaPorta underwent surgery last year to repair a back issue and has been working through his recovery ahead of the 2026 season, after playing just 9 games last season.

The former second-round pick has quickly become one of the Lions’ most important offensive weapons since arriving in Detroit.

Prior to his injury, LaPorta grabbed 40 receptions for 489 yards and three touchdowns

LaPorta earned Pro Bowl honors during his rookie season after setting an NFL record for a first-year tight end as he caught 86 passes for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2023.

His 10 touchdown receptions tied future Pro Football Hall of Fame tight end Rob Gronkowski for No. 2 all-time, falling two behind Chicago Bears legend and Super Bowl champion head coach Mike Ditka (12).

During his second season, LaPorta accumulated 726 yards with seven touchdowns.

His return provides a boost to a Lions offense that will look to regain their footing after missing the playoffs last season.

Detroit opens training camp with LaPorta expected to be available as the team prepares for the upcoming NFL season.
