SANTA CLARA — The 49ers’ veterans reported to training camp on Saturday, and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk remained far away.

Until Aiyuk applies for reinstatement — something he says he will not do as long as he remains under contract to the 49ers — he will remain in NFL limbo.

“Brandon is on a left-squad designation,” 49ers general manager John Lynch said on Saturday. “As such, he’s not on our 90-man roster.

“I personally, and we as an organization, are going to focus on the players that are here. And so, I don’t have anything to say on that, anything to add to that. We wish him well. We wish his family well.”

The 49ers granted Aiyuk and his representation permission to seek a trade, Lynch confirmed to NBC Sports Bay Area. But no team has stepped up to work out a deal with the 49ers for Aiyuk’s services.

Aiyuk, 28, has stated on social media that he plans to sign with the Washington Commanders the day after the 49ers release him. But there appears to be no resolution in the foreseeable future.

Aiyuk defaulted on his contract a year ago, and the 49ers exercised the right in his contract to void $27 million in guaranteed money.

Lynch declined to comment on whether the 49ers have pursued their right to reclaim a percentage of the $23 million signing bonus the team paid to him in 2024.

Aiyuk is likely to take away only a fraction of the scheduled $120 million contract he signed near the end of training camp in 2024.

Aiyuk was coming off a 2023 NFL season in which he caught 75 passes for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns.

But in the process of negotiating the contract and the aftermath, Aiyuk became disenchanted with the 49ers. He played in only seven games in 2024 before sustaining a severe knee injury. He has not played or practiced with the 49ers since that injury.

Aiyuk recently stated on social media that Lynch visited his residence unannounced at some point, presumably in the past year. Lynch on Saturday declined to provide any details, other than to suggest he had Aiyuk’s best interests in mind.

“I can tell you that at the forefront of our thoughts with any player is their well-being,” Lynch said. “I’ll just leave it at that. We wish him and we wish his family well.”

Aiyuk, who attended McQueen High School in Reno, posted this week that he purchased a $10 million estate in Loudoun County, Virginia.

The Commanders’ facility is in Ashburn, Virginia, which is located within Loudoun County.
