NFLPA investigating injury that ended Nic Scourton’s season at Panthers training camp

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
The NFL Players Association is investigating the season-ending ACL injury Nic Scourton suffered on the first day of Carolina Panthers training camp, head coach Dave Canales confirmed Sunday.
The review centers on the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement, which prohibits live contact during the first week of training camp.
The Panthers are cooperating with the union’s investigation. The team believes Scourton’s injury was a freak accident on a wet field rather than the result of an unobserved practice rule, a view shared by Panthers players.
“What happened was just a freak accident, and I feel so bad for the kid because he worked his butt off this offseason,” tight end Tommy Tremble said. “I think this was going to be his best year yet.”
Tremble said he did not believe the injury was caused by the intensity of the practice.
“I don’t think it was anything on anyone’s tempo,” Tremble said. “Everyone’s just trying to get better every day. It was just an unfortunate thing to happen at practice. It kind of sucked the life out of us when we saw it happen.”
It is not yet clear what punishment, if any, the Panthers could face if the NFLPA’s investigation determines that the team violated offseason practice rules.
