UNITY TWP, Pa. — Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was practically glowing when talking about third-year wide receiver Roman Wilson at the first day of training camp.
“I think the guy out of everybody show that has shown this new staff, because it is a new staff, a lot of great tape is Roman Wilson,” Rodgers said. “Roman had a really nice spring. Got to know him on a deeper level during that trip [to Wyoming], which was fun. I expect him to start to make some splash plays. He did in the spring. I expect him to have a nice camp.’
On the final play of the final team period for the first-team offense at minicamp, Rodgers ended a two-minute drill with a monster big play, dropping back to heave a 70-yard deep ball over the entire Steelers defense, and into the arms of a streaking Wilson.
DK Metcalf also raved about Wilson and the steps that he has taken to improve as a professional.
“The way he attacks the field every day… He’s smiling, he’s bouncing around, he’s attacking every route,” Metcalf said. “He’s not second guessing himself. I think that’s one thing that he did do quite a bit last year, was second guess himself. We would always tell him, like, ‘Rome, you’re in the NFL. You made it here for a reason, so just go out there and just continue to show why you should be here.’”
Steelers general manager Omar Khan expressed similar sentiments about Wilson.
“I just feel really good about him. He’s been working hard from Day 1 with this staff. They’re excited about him,” Khan said.
During an appearance on Christian Kuntz’s podcast in June, Wilson opened up on his chemistry with the four-time NFL MVP.
The third-round pick out of Michigan was a healthy scratch on numerous occasions down the stretch last year, as Rodgers preferred to have veteran receivers Adam Thielen and Marquez Valdes-Scantling in the lineup. Rodgers is very detailed and expects his receivers to be in the right spot.
Wilson admitted that mentally it was a challenge being on the same page with Rodgers.
“I think last year with Aaron, that was pretty cool,” Wilson said. “Just being so locked into his signals, how he calls plays, you know? You kind of just have to be on the same wavelength with him. You know, what he’s saying, what he’s trying to do, but it’s been good. Mentally, it’s been challenging, but it’s been fun and it hasn’t been too difficult so far.”

To say the least, Wilson hasn’t lived up to expectations in his first two seasons. In 13 games in 2025, Wilson recorded 12 receptions for 166 yards and two touchdowns. He was hampered by injuries in his rookie campaign, playing in only one game.
Now entering his third season, Wilson is hoping a fresh start under Mike McCarthy finally leads to the breakout many envisioned when he was drafted.
