As unlikely as it may seem, the Carolina Panthers could be a perfect fit for a disgruntled NFC South star.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive lineman Vita Vea has reportedly requested a trade from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With the organization seemingly dragging their feet on a contract extension, word is that the two-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl LV champion wants out.

In light of the supposed demand, ESPN senior NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler has come up with five potential landing spots for Vea. And even though the Bucs may be opposed to trading him within their own division, the Panthers have made the list.

Fowler writes:

The Panthers know Vea well, playing him twice a season in the NFC South. They are somewhat low on cap space (around $8 million), but they have spent two years rebuilding the defense and could use a boost for a pass rush which recently lost second-year edge rusher Nic Scourton to a knee injury.

Yes, intradivision deals are still unsavory in some league circles. But sentiment is slowly changing, as teams become more open to this concept if the value is good.

Given Carolina’s current situation, they just might be willing to dish out that value.

For one, Vea would fit right into defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero’s 3-4 front and make for a daunting duo alongside Derrick Brown. The 31-year-old’s play hasn’t really dropped off, either—as he notched 51 pressures, the third-highest mark of his career, this past season.

The Panthers have also taken quite a few hits on the injury front—with defensive linemen Tershawn Wharton (neck) and Bobby Brown III (hamstring) currently sidelined from training camp and outside linebacker Nic Scourton now out for the entire campaign due to an ACL tear.

Again, a match here feels pretty unlikely—especially given how Carolina and Tampa Bay slugged it out for the NFC South crown until the bitter end in 2025. But if the Bucs are changing course, then perhaps the Panthers—even if it means paying an intradivision tax—should make a call.
