When the calendar flips to January, the margins shrink and the pressure spikes. The NFL’s Wild Card Weekend opens with high-powered offenses, elite defenses and no shortages of storylines as all 14 teams begin the chase for a Super Bowl.
NFC: #5 Rams at #4 Panthers
The NFC will open playoff football with a 4:30 PM game on Saturday, January 10th. Los Angeles looks to get revenge on Carolina after they stunned them back in week 13. Although they are playing on the road, the Los Angeles Rams are the heavy favorite in this matchup. The Rams, led by MVP favorite Matthew Stafford, finished the season 12-5 while playing in the most difficult division in the NFL. The Carolina Panthers, on the other hand, are the only team in the playing field with a losing record, sitting at 8-9. Carolina is led by young stars all around and they need them to shine bright if they want to complete the upset. With Davante Adams returning, the Panthers CB duo of Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson need to be on their best to slow down this Rams dominant passing attack.

NFC: #7 Packers at #2 Bears
With the 8:00 PM game we will be seeing another Wild Card Saturday rematch. However this one means a little more than your average matchup. The Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears are heated division rivals and they split their head to head series this season 1-1. This season, the Bears exceeded all expectations by winning the NFC North and claiming the 2 seed. The Bears are led by first year HC Ben Johnson and the 2024 1st overall pick Caleb Williams, who seem to be a QB-HC duo that could take over the conference over the next few years. The Packers have dealt with unfortunate injuries to key players like star pass rusher Micah Parsons who they traded for in the offseason. Green Bay is going to need to rely on the experience of their star veterans and HC Matt LaFleur who has been in playoff situations plenty of times.

AFC: #6 Bills at #3 Jaguars
Sunday playoff football kicks off at 1:00 PM in Jacksonville. This young Jaguars team, who is coming into the playoffs on fire with an 8-game win streak, faces the early challenge of hosting Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills. The Bills are one of the few consistent familiar faces on the AFC’s side of the playoffs this year making their 7th consecutive playoff appearance this season. The Jaguars have looked unstoppable as of late while the Bills have slightly underperformed. Everything seems to be coming together for Jacksonville, but Buffalo’s experience and dominant running ability could be the difference in controlling this game. They are headlined by reigning MVP Josh Allen and the NFL’s rushing yards leader James Cook.
My Pick: Buffalo Bills
NFC: #6 49ers at #3 Eagles
The 2nd game on Sunday is a powerhouse matchup between two of the most successful teams in the NFC. The 12-5 Niners will travel across the country from San Francisco to Philadelphia to face the reigning Super Bowl champions. These two franchises have represented the NFC in 5 of the last 8 Super Bowl’s with the Eagles bringing home two championships to Philadelphia. For the 49ers, they are hoping to do something that has only happened twice in NFL history: winning the Super Bowl in their home stadium. The Philadelphia Eagles have tons of talent on both sides of the ball but their defense has stood out. Philadelphia’s front 7 is arguably the best in the NFL and their secondary has been elite, led by two All-Pro corners in Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper Dejean. San Francisco came into this season as one of the most complete teams in the NFL but unfortunate injuries on defense has made them a bit more one sided. The offensive weapons for the Niners will have to carry them through the playoffs as they hope for a miraculous return from injury for LB Fred Warner.
My Pick: Philadelphia Eagles
AFC: #7 Chargers at #2 Patriots
At 8:00 on Sunday the Chargers will travel to Foxborough to challenge the 14-3 Patriots. The New England Patriots, who are a dormant dynasty looking to return to glory, are led by MVP finalist Drake Maye and veteran HC Mike Vrabel. For the Chargers, they have to travel across the country and try to amend their playoff reputation in a cold Massachusetts environment. The Patriots were once on top of the football world and seemingly were the Super Bowl favorites every year led by Tom Brady. Now, they may have found the formula to start a new dynasty with young stars on both sides of the football. The doubt being placed on the Patriots is that they may not be able to compete against some top teams in the playoffs due to the fact that they played the easiest schedule in the NFL this season. The Chargers will have to get their 3-headed WR room going and it seems their best chance at victory may be through an offensive shootout.

AFC: #5 Texans at #4 Steelers
The lone Monday night game is an 8:15 PM matchup between two underdog teams. Although the Texans offense has been efficient, Houston is led by their tough defense. Houston has a very well-rounded defense with two All-Pro’s in EDGE Will Anderson Jr. and CB Derek Stingley Jr. Pittsburgh is relying on former 4x MVP QB Aaron Rodgers to find his old form at the age of 42. Luckily for the Steelers they will be getting their top target, D.K. Metcalf, back from his 2-game suspension. The Steelers defense is just about fully healthy now and they will look to dominate the line of scrimmage and make C.J. Stroud uncomfortable in the pocket. The Texans will have to travel to Pittsburgh, PA in 30 degree weather to advance against AFC North Champions. The Steelers were just feet from missing the playoffs when Ravens kicker Tyler Loop missed the division clinching kick last Sunday.

Bye Week:
Two unlikely teams majorly exceeded expectations and received the #1 seed and 1st-round bye in their respective conferences. For the AFC, the Denver Broncos took a massive leap this season going from the 7th seed to the 1st in just one season being led by a shutdown defense and 2nd year QB Bo Nix. For the NFC, the Seattle Seahawks claimed the 1 seed in a week 18 victory over the 49ers. Despite a 10-7 season last year, Seattle missed the playoffs. This offseason they made some major changes and now have one of the most prominent defenses in the league while offensively being headlined by OPOY favorite Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
As the highly anticipated Wild Card Weekend unfolds, reputations will be tested, hearts will break, and new contenders will emerge. With every matchup carrying its own stakes and storylines, the road to the Super Bowl officially begins.
