OXNARD, California (KLTV) – The Dallas Cowboys are continuing training camp this week, with head coach Brian Schottenheimer placing increased emphasis on conditioning as the team begins its push toward the postseason.
Schottenheimer said the conditioning program is deliberate and data-driven.
“We’re going to condition. It’s well planned out. And again, the numbers are showing you, hey, let’s get these guys in tip-top shape,” Schottenheimer said. “The best teams in the league are the best conditioned teams and we want to be able to outlast everybody.”
Players coming off the practice field said they understand the reasoning behind the stepped-up program.
“I agree with it. You know, it’s not fun. You know, it’s not easy either going through a full practice and doing what we just did,” one player said. “But it’s going to help us. The first thing that goes is the mind when you get fatigued. So if we eliminate that, then we’ll see what heights we can reach.”
A second player echoed that sentiment when asked whether he welcomed the added conditioning work.
“Heck, yeah. Anything to help us get better in any type of way, I’m game with it,” the player said.
The Cowboys’ ultimate goal is a trip to SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles for the Super Bowl. Schottenheimer’s conditioning push is aimed at keeping the roster fresh deep into the regular season and beyond.
