Washington Commanders training camp is in full swing. As the days go by, the team’s strengths and weaknesses become more obvious. One area that’s still in question is pass-catcher after the front office let last year’s leading receiver, Deebo Samuel, depart in free agency.
While Terry McLaurin is expected to resume his role as the No. 1 target in Washington now that he’s fully recovered from the ankle and quad injuries that plagued him last season, the Commanders still need a No. 2 wideout. Third-round rookie Antonio Williams has upside, but is he ready to be in a somewhat featured role right away as a 22-year-old?
Apparently, the Commanders are keeping a close watch on another playmaking receiver.

Washington Commanders Still Interested in Stefon Diggs

There are a number of notable free agent receivers still available on the open market. The group includes Stefon Diggs, Tyreek Hill, and Keenan Allen, each of whom is a former All-Pro or Pro Bowler. Yet, the Commanders seem particularly intrigued with Diggs, who’s a Maryland native.
The 32-year-old former First-Team All-Pro has frequently been linked to the Commanders this offseason. Traction could be building toward an agreement.
With no other No. 2 receiver stepping up thus far, ESPN’s Commanders insider John Keim reported that Diggs is a “player of interest” in Washington.
“There are multiple battles going on this camp, starting with: Who will be the No. 2 receiver opposite Terry McLaurin? Washington probably will mix and match depending on the matchups and the game plan, but players still have to earn time — whether it’s third-round pick Antonio Williams or past draft choices Jaylin Lane and Luke McCaffrey. The Commanders also have veterans Treylon Burks, Dyami Brown and Van Jefferson. So the battle is not only to earn time as a No. 2 but also potentially just for a roster spot. Also, the Commanders could still sign a wideout: Stefon Diggs remains a player of interest, but other free agents don’t appear to be on their radar.”

Unless another receiver establishes himself as the clear leader in this competition, the Commanders may feel like they have no choice but to look outside the organization for someone like Diggs. Of course, another team could become more desperate and beat them to the punch. After recording 1,000-yards in seven of his past eight seasons, Diggs is viewed as the best free agent wide receiver available.
