Packers Family Night offers valuable test as preseason approaches
Packers Family Night gave Green Bay its biggest workload of training camp, and Matt LaFleur saw plenty to learn from
The Green Bay Packers used their 25th annual Family Night practice at Lambeau Field as their most demanding test of training camp so far, giving players a chance to compete through fatigue in front of tens of thousands of fans.
Packers coach Matt LaFleur opened his postgame thoughts by sharing his displeasure with his team’s effort.
“Definitely sloppy,” LaFleur said. “It was our biggest workload we’ve had yet to date, so I think it was really good for those guys to have to fight through fatigue. It’s a lot of good stuff too for our guys to look at and learn from and to teach off of.”
Some of the most competitive moments came on the outside, where Green Bay’s wide receivers and defensive backs went head-to-head throughout the night.
Second-year receiver Matthew Golden matched up with cornerback Keisean Nixon, while Christian Watson battled rookie defensive back Brandon Cisse.
Golden said the daily competition with Green Bay’s secondary has helped sharpen his game during camp.
“I mean it’s always good,” Golden said. “I feel like we got great competition in practice. You know he pushes me and I push him. So for us, I feel like the competition we got between each other, man it’s good. And I feel like overall, I’m getting better from practicing against him.”

Cisse has also embraced his opportunities against Watson, one of the Packers’ most experienced receivers.
“It was great,” Cisse said. “Going against somebody like that high caliber, somebody that I have a ton of respect for, an elite talent, elite receiver.”
Cisse said the two have talked about using their matchups to make each other better throughout training camp.
“You kind of want those kind of matchups,” Cisse said.
